Every fuel-burning appliance in a house is a small, controlled fire, and every fire needs a clear path for its exhaust. When that path blocks, backs up, or was never built at all, one byproduct fills the rooms instead. Carbon monoxide has no color, smell, or taste, and the body takes it up in place of oxygen without noticing the substitution.
That is what sets it apart from other household hazards. Smoke announces itself, and natural gas is scented on purpose so a leak reaches your nose first. Carbon monoxide gives you nothing to notice, which leaves one small device on a wall as the entire warning system. Most homes have one. Fewer have one that would actually sound tonight.
The gas that leaves no warning
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention puts the toll at more than four hundred deaths a year in the United States from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning unrelated to fires, plus more than a hundred thousand emergency department visits. The deaths cluster in winter, when households light every combustion appliance they own and shut the windows.
The sources are ordinary. The Environmental Protection Agency lists unvented kerosene and gas space heaters, leaking chimneys and furnaces, back-drafting water heaters and wood stoves, gas ranges, and exhaust from a car left running in an attached garage. Portable generators belong on that list and take it over during an outage.
Symptoms are the second half of the problem. A low dose brings fatigue, and more brings headache, dizziness, confusion, and nausea, which in February reads like influenza and gets treated like it. Two things separate them. Carbon monoxide tends to make everyone in the house sick at once, pets included, and the symptoms ease outdoors and return once everybody goes back in.
Where the alarms actually belong
The national installation standard for carbon monoxide detection asks for an alarm outside each separate sleeping area, within about twenty feet of any bedroom door, and one on every occupiable level including the basement. Attics and crawl spaces are left out. Where a fuel-burning appliance sits inside a bedroom, that room gets its own alarm.
Two mistakes recur. A single alarm in a main-floor hallway leaves a finished basement and a bedroom over the garage uncovered, and those are the places exhaust collects. At the other extreme, an alarm mounted right beside the furnace catches the plume from a normal start-up and cries wolf until somebody unplugs it, which is worse than having none.
Battery backup matters more than it sounds like it should. An alarm that only plugs into the wall is asleep during the exact outage that has the household running a generator, so anything wired in should hold a battery too.
The expiration date nobody looks for
A carbon monoxide alarm is a chemical sensor, and chemical sensors wear out on a schedule whether or not they ever meet anything. The National Fire Protection Association puts the replacement window at seven to ten years depending on the model, so a unit installed the week a family moved in is often years past useful before anyone questions it. The manufacture date is printed on the back of the housing. Take each alarm down and read it.
Alarms built since 2009 announce their own retirement, usually as a chirp every thirty seconds or a display reading END or ERR. That signal is easy to mistake for a dying battery, and a fresh battery will not stop it. A chirp that survives a new battery means the unit is finished rather than fussy.
The test button confirms the horn, the circuit, and the power. It does not prove the sensor can still detect gas, which is why the age of a device matters as much as the monthly test.
Twenty feet and no exceptions
Portable generators are the worst single offender here. The Consumer Product Safety Commission, which tracks these fatalities, has estimated that generators alone kill roughly eighty-five to a hundred people a year in the United States, about half of them in the four coldest months. Federal preparedness guidance is blunt about the remedy. Run a generator outdoors only, at least twenty feet from windows, doors, and an attached garage, exhaust aimed away from the house.
An open garage door is not outdoors. Neither is a carport, a covered porch, or a shed with the door propped. Charcoal grills and camp stoves live under the same rule, and heating a home with a gas oven belongs on the never list beside them.
Texas showed what this failure looks like at scale. In a report dated December 31, 2021, the Texas Department of State Health Services confirmed 246 deaths tied to the February 2021 winter storm, and nineteen of them, 7.7 percent, were fatal carbon monoxide poisonings. The listed circumstances are worth reading slowly: generators, grills, and heaters used the wrong way, vehicles running in enclosed spaces, and ice obstructing the vents on gas-powered heating equipment. That last one required no mistake by anyone inside.
When the alarm sounds and nobody feels sick
The response is short enough to memorize, and looking for the cause is not part of it. Move everyone outside into fresh air, count heads and pets, then call 911 from outside and say a carbon monoxide alarm is sounding. Do not go back in for a phone or a look at the furnace, and do not throw the windows open first, because airing the house out before anyone measures it erases the reading responders need.
Crews arrive with meters and can read levels a person has no way to sense. If anyone is dizzy, confused, or vomiting, say so to the dispatcher, because that changes what gets sent. An alarm that goes quiet on its own has not settled anything either. It sounded because a sensor met gas, and the source needs identifying before the household sleeps there again.

Twenty minutes before the heating season
All of this collapses into one short session, done once a year before the first cold night. Walk the house with a stepladder and a pen. Read the manufacture date on every alarm, press every test button, swap every battery that is not sealed in for a decade, and count what you have against the placement rules above. Write the date on masking tape stuck to each unit, which turns next year's check into a glance.
Then handle the two jobs an alarm cannot do for you. Book the annual inspection for the furnace, the water heater, and any vented heater, since a cracked heat exchanger or a blocked flue is the failure a detector catches only after it starts.
